    • Looking back at Jupiter's chaotic southern hemisphere...🌀⁣
⁣
After a close flyby of Jupiter on Nov. 3, 2019, our @nasajuno spacecraft's JunoCam captured this striking view of the giant planet, showing massive cyclones and chaotic clouds. When the image was taken, Juno was traveling at about 85,000 mph (137,000 kilometers per hour) relative to the planet. A little more than an hour earlier — at the point of closest approach to the cloud tops — the spacecraft reached speeds relative to Jupiter in excess of 130,000 mph (209,000 kilometers per hour).⁣
⁣
Citizen scientist Ali Abbasi created this image using data from the spacecraft's JunoCam imager. ⁣

What does this image evoke for you? This photo was captured by NASA astronaut Jessica Meir as the International Space Station (@ISS) orbited ~250 miles (~400 km) over London’s glittery nightscape.⁣

You're probably wondering how I ended up in this situation...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
On a Nov. 22 spacewalk, @europeanspaceagency astronaut Luca Parmitano caught a ride over to the worksite outside the International Space Station (@ISS) aboard the station's robotic arm. Known as Canadarm2, the robotic arm was operated from inside the station by astronaut Jessica Meir. At the worksite, Parmitano and fellow spacewalker Andrew Morgan (@AstroDrewMorgan) performed repairs on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer instrument, a cosmic particle detector. Repairs continue in the next spacewalk on Monday, Dec. 2.⁣ ⁣

    • 🎶 Baby stars! 🎶 ✨ This galaxy might be bursting with star formation and stellar newborns. ⁣
⁣
Our @NASAHubble space telescope turned its powerful eye towards galaxy NGC 3749, over 135 million light-years away from Earth. This galaxy shows strong emission lines (signs of emission from elements within a galaxy's spectrum of light), suggesting that it has plenty of star-forming material and energetic new stars. ⁣
⁣
This study technique, known as spectroscopy, is used by astronomers to understand a galaxy’s type and composition, the density and temperature of any emitting gas, the star formation rate, or how massive the galaxy’s central black hole might be. ⁣

    • Did this debris shield spark joy?⁣
⁣
Sometimes you need to let go of what no longer serves you!⁣
⁣
On the first spacewalk to repair the International Space Station's cosmic particle detector, @AstroDrewMorgan and @europeanspaceagency astronaut Luca Parmitano removed a debris shield to access the work site. It was too big to take inside, so the best option was to jettison it behind @iss, where it will disintegrate in the upper atmosphere. This video was taken on Nov. 15.⁣
⁣
On Friday, Nov. 22, the two astronauts will once again venture into the vacuum of space to resume repair work on the particle detector, called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer. Watch live coverage starting at 5:30am ET on nasa.gov/live.⁣

    • It may look like a veiny eyeball, but Jupiter's moon Europa is more than meets the eye. 👁️⁣
⁣
For the first time, scientists have detected water vapor above the icy moon's surface, giving us further evidence that oceans of liquid water may exist beneath Europa's crust. ⁣
⁣
💧 Water is one of the main ingredients necessary for life, making Europa an alluring destination for exploration. Scientists will soon be able get close enough to this intriguing moon to settle their lingering questions. The Europa Clipper mission, expected to launch in the mid-2020s, will survey the moon up close and sample molecules in its atmosphere.⁣
⁣
Seen here is a view of Europa made from images taken by the Galileo spacecraft in the late 1990s during a flyby. ⁣
